At E3 2018, Microsoft revealed that it was expanding its first-party studio roster, and a result, it appears that the company is reportedly close to acquiring Obsidian Entertainment, which is best known for titles such as Fallout: New Vegas, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2, South Park: The Stick of Truth, and Pillars of Eternity.
Despite the popularity of this developer, it fell into a financial crisis back in 2012 that led to Pillars of Eternity being a crowdfunded project. With its success, Obsidian Entertainment was saved from closure, with the company having also recently developed a sequel to that game. Nevertheless, despite everything going for the developer, a highly fan-desired Fallout: New Vegas 2 is not likely to happen.
In fact, it is “very doubtful,” according to the magic eight ball Obsidian used in response to a fan question on Twitter. Without a doubt, a follow-up would be extremely popular, but there are plenty of issues in the legality of it. Nevertheless, it hasn’t prevented the company from being asked about a potential sequel or follow-up entry. Check it out below:

Bethesda has even recently weighed in on the topic of a sequel to New Vegas, with Todd Howard revealing its better to keep things internal for the company, despite also stating that Obsidian did a fantastic job with its rendition of the post-apocalyptic franchise. Howard went on to say he would never say never, but its very unlikely fans get a sequel anytime soon due to ongoing projects such as Fallout 76 and The Elder Scrolls 6.
This may be disappointing to many, as rumors of a direct or spiritual successor rear their heads quite often, with one of the most popular being Fallout: New Orleans. There is even a mod known as Fallout: New California coming soon, which speaks to how popular Obsidian’s entry in the franchise is. Nevertheless, while it’s unlikely Obsidian ever ventures back into the Mojave Desert, the company has previously revealed that it would love to should the opportunity ever arise.
Fallout: New Vegas is available for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.
