A couple of months ago, Netflix announced that Superman actor Henry Cavill will lead the cast of the upcoming TV adaptation of The Witcher. Now, the streaming giant has unveiled the first look of Cavill as Geralt of Rivia.
Netflix’s The Witcher began production this month, and images just came in of actor Henry Cavill in full costume and makeup. The official Twitter account of Netflix also posted a short clip, showcasing a screen test of the actor. Ever since the announcement of Cavill’s role on the upcoming Netflix Original, some people were not convinced whether he is the perfect fit to play the iconic Witcher. However, people might now think otherwise based on what was shown so far.
Moreover, several actors were also confirmed to appear on the series such as Freya Allan as Ciri, Anya Chalotra as Yennefer, Johdi May as Queen Calanthe, Björn Hlynur Haraldsson as Eist, Adam Levy as Mouseack, and MyAnna Burig as Tissaia, to name a few. As of the moment, how the upcoming show would fit alongside the novels and game franchise remains to be unknown, but Netflix description of the series suggests that it would remain faithful to the source material.

When Netflix began scouting actors for the show, the casting process has been enveloped in controversy, most specifically to the role of Ciri. A listing that was posted on the National Youth Center suggested that Netflix was looking for a BAME (Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic) actress to play the part of Ciri, which outraged some fans of the show, citing that casting a person of color would be unfaithful to the source material.
The backlash on Ciri’s casting went so far that it prompted showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich to take a hiatus from social media saying that, “The love here is amazing, and the hate is enlightening, like a real-life Trial of the Grasses, except I HAVE to read less and write more — or we won’t have a damn finale.” In the end, actress Freya Allan was given the role of Ciri.
Now that Geralt’s look has been unveiled, it is exciting to see what the other characters would look like once they get into character. Hopefully, Netflix would reveal glimpses of other characters in the not so distant future.
The Witcher is expected to premiere on Netflix sometime in 2019.
