It won’t be too much longer before Mortal Kombat fans will finally be able to get their hands on the eleventh numbered entry in the long-running fighting game series, with MK11 set to release across multiple platforms next month. Those looking forward to the reboot of the original movie franchise, however, will need to be a bit more patient, as the project has yet to even begin filming. Nevertheless, fans can now get a better idea of who the plot could revolve around once the project is green-lit, as the film’s character list has apparently leaked online.
According to the leak, multiple Mortal Kombat veterans will be making an appearance in the movie reboot, with the character list showing that Kano, Raiden, Sonya Blade, Jax, Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Sub-Zero, Mileena, and Shang Tsung are to be featured in some capacity. There are notable absences, with classic fighters from the original game such as Scorpion and Johnny Cage not being listed. Of course, it’s entirely possible that there will be more characters featured.
Interestingly enough, though, the Mortal Kombat movie reboot will apparently focus on a new character dubbed Cole Turner, a “washed up” boxer that is recruited to help protect Earth “in an eternal battle with killers from another dimension”. As far as Turner’s background is concerned, little is known other than the fact he has a daughter named Emily, and that he has had a “mysterious upbringing”.
For those unaware, Warner Bros.’ New Line Cinema division has been working for a lengthy amount of time on the reboot to the Mortal Kombat movie franchise, with Mortal Kombat: Legacy director Kevin Tancharoen having once been attached to the project before dropping out entirely in 2013. New Line then brought in director James Wan (Aquaman, Saw) to produce the project in 2015, with writers Dave Callaham (Doom, The Expendables) and Oren Uziel (22 Jump Street, Detective Pikachu) having then been attached to write. Now, though, it looks as if Simon McQuoid is apparently set to direct a completed MK movie script by Greg Russo.

All things considered, we will simply have to wait and see if the leaked character list even comes close to the final cast of the Mortal Kombat movie reboot, especially since the project is still in the pre-production phase and may not ever see the light of day. Nevertheless, it would be interesting to see what a contemporary take of the fighting game franchise would look like on the big screen, and if it could be better than its predecessors.
The Mortal Kombat movie reboot has yet to receive an official release date.
